The Clock Tower

Ok well, I've been fightin the flu for the past 2 days. But I managed to finish this today as I'm feeling much better. Should be back to work tomorrow to continue working on the other images, but I'm quite pleased how this one came out.
This is the scene immediately following the foreigner's heart attack. The boy grabs the kite from him, but turns out to be too light to hold it down and gets carried away with the strong wind. He winds up in a predicament when the kite heads straight for the nearby college clock tower!

Not much else to say bout this piece except.... In the story the boy makes mention that he can tell what time it is by looking at the clock on the tower. I knew this, but I decided to put the hands on the clock last... the absoluutte last thing I did on this piece was the hands, so I read back the part of the story that referenced the hands so i can put them in correctly and realised the time was 4:15.... and the boy's feet are taking up most of the right side of the clock, so you can't even see the hands that well anyway. Bit of a blunder in my part but I think it's alright still hahaha

Heart Attack modified

Right well I was just reminded that the American fellow in this picture is described in the story as having a "nicotine stained handle bar moustache" So yes I made the correction. Forgot that little description there. Made a few additional adjustments as well. lightened the shadows on his eyes so he doesnt look like he has a black eye, washed his face with a little blue to make him look more winded, added a little arm hair on him, thickened his eyebrows, gave him a little stuble and made his hair a little more windswept too. I also changed the background hue from a barren brown to a little more lush green.

Heart Attack

During a flight demo of a giant kite brought down by an American, the American kite flyer has a heart attack and the protagonist runs to his assistance where all the craziness starts.
I managed to save some process work for this piece because it took me so long... 17 hours So I'll show that too.

Well I drew all the characters individually in separate layers and arranged the composition with the move tool. I then erased certain lines to show overlap.

Improvised the background. Lots of trees including a pink and yellow poui tree as those are common during the dry season in trinidad which is the time period in which this story is going on.

Well I realised I have the crowd in the background "understood" in silhouettes. Which means I can't have the background trees and such so detailed as it would look off. So I overlaid with a greeny yellow in a separate layer in a low opacity so it blurs the background.

Enhanced the detailed background figures and placed the flat colors on the 2 main foreground figures.

Final Story

Well Summer is quickly coming to a close, which means this book is coming to a wrap soon too. Just about 3 weeks to execute 6 illustrations minimum. Game on. I decided to tackle this last story a bit differently. First of all I decided to keep my lines for them in final, and I'm gonna be doing all the line work first, then coloring all in one sweep, take it day by day and that should ensure I finish on time. Seeing as the bulk of the work is line and composition, I think this may work out to be faster than the way I've been tackling the first 2 stories. Anyway, I have the lines for 4 Illustrations completed. Here they are:

Gotcha!

Ok so I did some work this weekend and wrapped up the last image i worked on, on friday. Gotcha! Basically A bunch of robbers raid the place... omg I just thought about how long I would be typing if I gave a full synopsis of whats happening here... phew. thats why God invented bullet points. Ahem.

-Robbers raid old man's house
-main character sneaks out of house to go investigate out of worry for the old man.
-His sister follows him
-Shes a woman so she doesnt understand whats going on (lol)
-The robbers catch her
-The old man blows a dart in their asses immobilizing them with the dart's toxin

This image is a liiitle different from the others because I got a bit fed up with rendering and left some of my line work to get the job done, I think it looks fine honestly, (better than if I decided to lose them) And I think I will include my lines in the last story.
One more big page for this one. Crunch time. Knocking back redbulls now!!

Big Update

So I know its been a while since the last update, I've completed another image for "The Old Man and the Museum" but I had to go back and make some adjustments, and do a couple more images for "A Most Unlikely Saviour" (The pigeon story) So here they are, Starting with the Old Man and the Museum

Here the Boy finds out the old man has rigged his house with trip wires to warn him of trespassing burglars.

And these are the new images for "A Most Unlikely Saviour"

This is a 2 page spread of the boat trip taking a turn for the worse. The Boat's engine dies and it is pummeled by waves until it runs aground on a reef. The stormy weather isn't in the story, but I thought it would be more dramatic, and more symbolic of the impending danger the family is about to experience, being shipwrecked on a deserted island with no way off. (Yes I know that reef fish looks like Doree)

This is a small vignette just to show the little boy releasing the pigeon with a note hoping the owner reads it and calls in a rescue.

This was the first image I did, I editted it up a bit, added in the parrot's shadow and adjusted the color of the background making it more vivid.
